Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas

On the same day that Alejandro “Alito” Moreno registered to remain at the head of the PRI for another eight years, the Reforma newspaper revealed that the PRI member owns a beach, which he managed to purchase before assuming the governorship of Campeche in 2015.

The newspaper disclosed that the beach is located on a 305,000-square-meter plot of land that he acquired, with the current approximate price being 450 million pesos. However, the national media outlet claimed that the purchase of this land was completed for only 100,000 pesos.

It was also reported that just a few days after he took office as governor of Campeche, in September 2015, he managed to formalize the land deed. A few months later, he obtained a concession from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) for the use of a 10,000-square-meter federal zone, which would allow the installation of palapas.

After the Reforma cover was published, based on documents in the possession of the newspaper, Alejandro Moreno posted a video on his social media showing a series of front pages on a table, which he called the “table of slander.”

Without presenting any evidence to disprove the newspapers’ claims, he asserted that a “brutal campaign” of “attack, slander, and defamation” had been launched against him, which he attributed to his stance against the judicial reform.

“This has come about because the PRI and, clearly, I as president, have taken a firm and resolute position. The PRI is against the initiative to amend the Constitution and eliminate the Judiciary,” he said.

Hours later, Alito Moreno appeared at the National Executive Committee (CEN) of the party in Mexico City to present, alongside Carolina Viggiano – the current PRI Secretary General – his registration to be re-elected as part of a formula to continue at the head of the party for at least the next eight years.

This came after, in recent weeks, he had ensured that modifications would be made to the PRI statutes to seek re-election, a move that former party leaders have opposed and filed challenges against.
